Project: Event Barn Relocation and Addition
Client: Franklin Park Conservatory
Location: Columbus, Ohio
This project relocated an existing post-and-beam Timber Barn from the mid-1800’s to Franklin Park. Due to the change in use from Low Hazard Agricultural to Assembly, the existing framing was evaluated and reinforced where necessary. Existing connections utilized mortise and tenon joints with oak pegs and these were reused wherever loads permitted. Deteriorated, cut or missing members were replaced. Gable ends were entirely reconstructed. The original aesthetic of the Timber Barn was maintained throughout. The facility was placed over a new basement with a prestressed, precast hollow core concrete plank main floor. Conventionally-framed wood additions were added to each end, as was a porch on one side. A cupola was added to the barn roof. New mechanical system support, ceiling fan and chandelier supports were provided. Accessibility was provided via an elevator.
